Yorke’s Surfarama 2024
Hey gamers,
So I embarked on a journey down to Marion Bay for this year’s Surfarama Festival. Whilst Ari stayed back for the Sickest 100 at Uni Bar, I was greening tf out with Moshpit Girlfriend in some field like 4 hours away lol.
The trek was fukken LONG but I was equipped with my trusty yellow hat and a bag of gummy worms as I gunned it down the dodgy dirt roads, blasting The Effends in my lil’ white Corolla, keen for a bloody adventure in the middle of nowhere.
After pulling up to the hidden beach town, I met up with the band and Bella Veith proceeded to make instant noodles in a fucking mug, much to my dismay. Anyways, they jammed in the infamous Marion Bay rehearsal space - “Corey’s Shed”, complete with dusty toms and green cymbals.
Guitarist Teegan Gurney lives down that way, so they’re well known in the remote, but tight-knit community. This local connection, combined with their impressive performance at last year’s Surfarama, earned them a prestigious, later-slot on the line-up. A true testament to the band as they move their way up in the music world!
After the stage was warmed up by Sacrificial Larynx (or Sacky Larry if you’d prefer), Mopshit Gogfried took the stage by force, for a titanic crowd of mental punters. As per usual, the set opened with a deadly rendition of Sonic Youth’s “Kool Thing”, blasting our ears with an earth-shattering sonic assault, continued by a cast of original music, including a bizarre jam track featuring Mik on saxophone?!?!??!?!
Even though we were far from the scene back home, the folks from Marion Bay were as passionate as any Cranker crowd I’d ever seen. Dudes were constantly crowdsurfing, moshing and GROOVING baby!
Anyways, after we recovered, we raided the backstage esky and hid in Bella’s Beast aka “Sharona” - the comfiest and least sus white van you will ever meet!
Yeah so the next hours were an absolute blur, except for distinct memories of Emily tying my hair back and Finn “supervising” me, you know??? But yeah I woke to an absolute assault on the eyes from the sun and wrote some songs by the beach. Bro I fucking love music so much, this was such a crazy adventure, hope to see you all down there next time XOXOXOXO Love from Will
